ESPN – The New York Yankees are going into the soccer business.
The Yankees are partnering with Manchester City to own Major League Soccer’s 20th team, an expansion franchise, which will be called New York City Football Club and plans to start play in the 2015 season.
Manchester City, owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, will be the majority owner of the team.
While MLS has been negotiating with New York to build a stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, near the home of the New York Mets, NYC FC will start play at an interim home and will consider other sites for a stadium.
So wait, we aren’t big soccer fans on this here site so forgive us of our ignorance.
The MLS is a real thing? I thought they played in second rate venues on the outskirts of the city. I always considered it like minor league baseball.
Do the Redbulls play in the MLS? I am going to say yes, I didn’t Google it. I couldn’t tell you a player on that team even if you were to give me $1million dollars.
Is soccer that much of an up and coming sport that people want two New York Teams?
Let’s break it down, baseball is KING in NY year round. Two die hard cut throat franchises in Yanks and Mets. Football is a close second only if the Jets/Giants are good. Hockey has three teams with Rangers, Islanders, and Devils (well they’re New Jersey but come on now…oh and the Sabres might as well be in Canada). Basketball has Knicks/Nets which is only a thing because they play in the winter when nobody has anything to do. Also let us not forgot college basketball: St. Johns and Big East/BIG Catholic 7
Do we really need another team? Why put another sport venue in Flushing? There is no social life there at all. Build it up like outside Wrigley or Fenway. Unless a soccer team is going to bring that, why add another cluster mess to Flushing?
Also, “New York City Football Club” is that name serious? How unoriginal, boring and pathetic is that? Soccer…you are fun to play but beyond painful to watch and follow.
