Times Union – Many of the users in my Facebook feed are starting to look alike, at least according to their profile picture.
To recognize — and support — the same sex marriage fight happening in Washington, many people are changing their avatar to a blue box with two yellow lines, or an equal sign (AKA the sign of equality), or a red box with a pink equal sign.
The blue box is the permanent logo of the Human Rights Campaign. The red is in observance of the Supreme Court hearings today and tomorrow.
I’m all for people expressing their views and freedom of speech in a professional and appropriate manner but lets be real. Is your profile picture going to change anything? You just look like a sheep in a herd. It’s the same thing as posting any sort of opinion (political opinions especially) on Facebook. I’m never in favor of this type of thing. If you want to change something, do something. Facebook pictures only change how people look at you but never the actual matter at hand.
So if you support gay marriage, write to your congressional rep. If you oppose gay marriage, write to your congressional rep. It’s not difficult and it’s much more powerful than a damn Facebook picture.
