No Booze at College Games? Here’s Why

Minneosta FootballTwin Cities – The University of Minnesota lost almost $16,000 last year on alcohol sales at home football games, despite selling more than $900,000 worth of beer and wine.

The school released the figures to the Associated Press after a records request, which showed it incurred significant expenses from its first season selling alcohol stadium-wide at TCF Bank Stadium. Those include hiring additional police and security officers, setting up tents and other facilities, and equipment rental. Roughly half of its revenues went directly to Philadelphia-based Aramark Corp., which had the contract to sell beer and wine.

The booze itself cost the university about $180,000.

We all have been to a pro event where the level of playing is normally the best around and a stadium draft beer cost as much as a six pack in the store. Whenever you go to a college game, unless it is held at a pro-venue, like Georgetown at the MCI Center or St. Johns at Madison Square Garden, the booze is plentiful. Some schools don’t sell booze for obvious reasons: fan base and money.
Fan base: I don’t know the exact stat but I could image that it pretty high that a lot of the on campus venues do not sell booze at their games because the majority of the students are underage. Not saying the underage students won’t be tossing them back, but this is a BIG reason why you can’t get booze, plain and simple.
Money:  As stated in the link above, its all about C.R.E.A.M.  (Cash Rules Everything Around Me). University of Minnesota lost $16,000 on their first season of beer sales at football games. I’m not going to be Eddie Economics here but that isn’t good. You should only be introducing money makers, not money takers into your program especially in college.
