Daily Mail – The would-be female assassin who shot a baseball star and inspired the Robert Redford movie ‘The Natural’ has died, age 83.
Ruth Ann Steinhagen was an obsessed 19-year-old when she lured Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Eddie Waitkus to her Chicago hotel room with a cryptic note in 1949 and then shot him in the chest with a rifle.
The salacious tabloid story was later fictionalized and immortalized in the 1952 novel ‘The Natural’ and the 1984 film starring Redford as the character patterned after Waitkus and Barbara Hershey playing the young shooter.
So the lady who shot the man that eventually was depicted by Robert Redford in 1984’s “The Natural” died this week. I always knew this movie was based on a book which was based on a real person. But holy mackerel I didn’t know it was literally like this. Ruth Ann Steinhagen was/is a nutjob. I know we are just beginning March Madness but you should take the time and watch The Natural before opening day on April 1. It is one of the best baseball movies out there.
