Jimmy V 20 Years Later

March 4, 2013 11:31 AM by Wade Blogs

Jimmy VToday marks the 20th anniversary of the speech that touched the hearts, the minds, and the souls of people all over the world.

Jimmy Valvano, known to everyone as Jimmy V, was on hand at the ESPY awards to accept the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. An accomplishment on its own deserve recognition of remembrance, but it is was what he did after. Valvano summoned the courage to say “screw you!” to the cancer wracking his body as well as the time limit on speeches to deliver a remarkable oration.

What I remember through the replaying of that speech is the closing line: “Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It can not touch my mind, it can not touch my heart and it can not touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever.”

Jimmy V, you have inspired and give so much hope to so many dealing with cancer. To all those fighting the battle…FIGHT ON and God Bless!
