The legendary Stan the Man was laid to rest this weekend. He was the forgotten hero of baseball’s golden years and usually took a back seat to the likes of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snyder, and Ted Williams. Not too many people knew Stan Musial other than his nickname or that he played for the St. Louis Cardinals. As a student of the wonderful game that is baseball I consider Stan Musial one of the top 25 players ever to play between the lines. Bob Costas, legendary sports commentator, eulogized Stan Musial and his video is below. If you want to know anything and everything about Stan Musial take 20 minutes to watch this video.
It gives me chills hearing the stories about Stan Musial’s life. How Mickey Mantle, a raging booze bag, did not have a single drink for 1 day out of respect for Stan Musial. Mickey Mantle believed Musial was better than him not because he was a better player but because he was a better man.
I don’t think there will ever be a player in the history of sports that will be loved by a city like Stan Musial was in St. Louis. Lines wrapping around the church, people literally crying, and even the St. Louis Blues honoring the legend on their warmups:
Kids I would look no further than Stan the Man as a role model. He kept his mouth shut, went to work, got results, and did it all over again. No glitz, no glamour, just love of the game.
Sidenote – Costas eulogized Mickey Mantle as well back in 1995. Is this guy friends with everyone or do people hire him to do eulogies because of his career/voice?
