NY Times – In an announcement scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time, the New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans, ending an awkward period of having a regional nickname for a region other than their own.
The announcement has been rumored since early December, and the choice of Pelicans as a replacement name was a poorly kept secret, but making things official opens the door for one of the stranger possibilities in terms of N.B.A. recordkeeping should the Charlotte Bobcats, an expansion team that replaced the Hornets after the team moved to New Orleans in 2002, decide to reclaim the Hornets moniker.
Welp, it’s happening. New Orleans is about to be home to the worst named team in professional sports. We wrote about the rumor back in December but I really didn’t think this would go through. They’re going to become the Islanders of the NBA (well the Islanders mostly because of their building…but that’s changing soon). Players aren’t going to want to play there solely because of their name. Ok, not really but shit this is just terrible.
Sportslogos.net was able to get their hands on a leaked logo for the franchise. Take a look:
I’m surprised here. It’s actually a pretty solid logo. Although, all I keep thinking is how a Jumanji board should be in the pelicans mouth instead of a basketball.
The Pelicans it is. I don’t like it right now. I also don’t like change. Give me a few seasons of hearing it and I’m sure I’ll like it then. But for now, it’s the Pelicans and there’s nothing any of us can do about it.
