Rajon Rondo recently said that he “learned nothing” from his 2 game suspension for fueling the Nets-Celtics brawl on November 28th. People are making a big deal about this but come on, that’s Rondo for you. Hell, that’s how Kevin Garnett is as well. And you know what? I love it.
These two guys play with an old school competitive mentality. They’re not trying to make friends on the court. They’re there to do their job and win basketball games. So many guys today go out there, hugging their buddies, smiling, laughing, wearing those dumb fucking thick framed hipster glasses, etc. Rondo and KG are not in that business. Say what you want about both of these guys, but you love them if they’re on your team. If you have one, let alone two guys that will defend their teammates, play 110%, and hit the court to win, you want them on your team.
Hell, this isn’t even an NBA problem. This applies to all sports. Take baseball for example. Guy hits a single, he’s chatting away with the first baseman. You NEVER saw that back in the day. Shit, Ty Cobb sharpened his cleats for sliding into second and breaking up double plays. Seems like the only time you see any sort of serious, aggressive competition now is in international play.
I’m not saying you can’t be friends off your respective playing fields, but during games, play to win. Don’t play to make friends. Would love to see more guys with this passion and attitude.
